Solid Sample Preparation for Microbiology

The Interscience BagMixer ® is a solid sample preparation system which blends the sample materials with a stomach like action in a sterile bag. The bag is repetitively squeezed to break up the contents. Special filter bags automatically separate the juice or inoculum from the solids. A range of accessories facilitate bag handling and storage.

Introduction to the BagSystem

The BagSystem is very easy to use. There are different kinds of bags depending on your application. There are plain bags and bags with built in filters. The basic method of operation is to load a bag with the product to be blended along with some diluting fluid. The bag is then placed in the blender and the door closed. The BagMixer is then run for the programmed amount of time. The speed of the stomach action (paddles) is variable to suit the product. The bag complete with the now blended contents is removed from the BagMixer. The bag and contents can now be stored for later use or the contents prepared for analysis. Depending on the type of filter bag used the inoculum can be either pipetted out after blending or, with a type S bag, poured out whilst the solids remain behind.

There are various accessories that you can order to make the bag handling process very hygienic and efficient. These include :

BagPipette® is an automatic pipette which takes preset sample volumes of 1.0 ml, 0.8 ml and 0.1 ml according the choice of volume button. It can make serial dilutions in tubes, 1 ml in 9 ml or dispense 1 ml of sample in a Petri dish. The pipette is fully autoclavable.

BagTips® The pipette uses sterile BagTips straws which are supplied in sterile packages of 25 straws ( the bag can be resealed with a BagClip.)

BagFilter® - Special Filter Bags for Blenders
BagFilters are special sterile bags for use with the BagMixer blenders. The filter eliminates particles from the fluid yet ensures a balanced distribution of inoculum by the to and fro of the sample through the filter during blending. After blending, the inoculum is homogeneous and easy to use, whilst its bacterial characteristics remain unchanged. There are several types of filter bags.
	Bags Type P and Type S. In both P and S types the filter is sealed to front and back wall of the bag to form two vertical sections running from the top to the bottom of the bag. A pipette can be used in both P and S type bags after blending. The Type S has an additional transverse seal which allows the liquid to be poured out of the bag without over spilling whilst the solids remain behind. Lateral filter bags are available for the standard and Jumbo BagMixers
BagPage BagPage is a new filter bag with the filter running the full width and depth of the bag to form 2 compartments of equal size. These bags are available for all bag mixers 100 ml, 400 ml and 3500 ml
